The Criminal Court has sentenced a homeowner to 10 years in prison for allowing their property to be used as a den for drug use and trafficking.

This marks the first time an individual has been sentenced in the Maldives for such an offense under the Drugs Act.

Ibrahim Nazim, a resident of G. Pelican, has been convicted and sentenced to prison in this case. The state filed charges against him for knowingly, or having reasonable grounds to believe, permitting his residence to be used for the consumption, sale, and peddling of illicit drugs.

Regarding the background of the case, police conducted a search of G. Pelican on January 20, 2026, following intelligence reports that the premises were being used for drug trafficking and consumption. Upon arrival, officers ordered the occupants to open the main gate. When they failed to comply, police executed a court-authorized search warrant and gained entry to the residence by force.

In its verdict concluding the trial, the Criminal Court ruled that the charges brought against Ibrahim Nazim under Section 127 of the Drugs Act have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, he has been sentenced to 10 years in prison as a penalty for the offense.

Legal experts highlight that taking legal action against property owners who allow their premises to be used as drug dens is a significant milestone in the fight against the drug epidemic. As this marks the first instance of a conviction under this specific legal provision, it is viewed as a stern warning to those who facilitate such activities.
