Man sentenced to prison for defrauding over MVR 700,000 using fake female identity

A man has been sentenced to prison and fined for defrauding individuals of over MVR 700,000 by posing as a woman through a fake Facebook profile to establish close relationships.
The Criminal Court has sentenced Ismail Zabeeh, of Siliconge, K. Kaashidhoo, to imprisonment in connection with this case.
The Criminal Court has sentenced Zabeeh to two years and six months in prison, along with a fine of 100,000 Rufiyaa. The court further ordered that the fine be paid to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) within one year from the date the charges were filed.
Through this account, Zabeeh obtained a total of 710,550 Rufiyaa over a three-year period between January 2022 and August 2024.
The Prosecutor General's Office has requested the forfeiture of all assets acquired by the individual, asserting that the funds were obtained through criminal activities.
While the charges were still pending in court, Zabeeh pleaded guilty and entered into a plea agreement with the state. The court decided to accept the agreement after determining that all the necessary legal requirements and conditions had been met.
