The Elections Commission (EC) has urged political parties to strictly adhere to the legal codes of conduct and statutory requirements stipulated in the Political Parties Act during their various activities and meetings.

In a press statement released today, the Elections Commission (EC) noted that it has observed political parties engaging in activities and meetings where unlawful and unsubstantiated claims are being made. The Commission further reminded all parties that leveling criticisms against any political party or its members based on unproven allegations is a direct violation of the code of conduct stipulated in Section 45(d) of Law No. 4/2013 (the Political Parties Act).

The Elections Commission (EC) further stated that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right guaranteed to every citizen under the Constitution, this freedom must be exercised with responsibility. The Commission emphasized that political activities should also be conducted within the framework of such responsible principles.

The Elections Commission has therefore advised political parties to adhere to the code of conduct stipulated in Section 45 of the Political Parties Act when organizing and conducting gatherings and activities. Furthermore, the Commission urged parties to refrain from all actions prohibited under Section 7(a) of the same Act.

Furthermore, the Commission has urged all political parties to conduct their activities in compliance with the existing laws and regulations of the Maldives.
