The Indian state of Kerala has donated 1,200 saplings to the Maldives in support of the government's initiative to plant five million trees across the archipelago.

In a ceremony held at the Maldivian Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's Forest Minister Shibu Baby John officially handed over 600 mango saplings and 600 teak saplings to the Maldives. Consul General Aminath Shifana accepted the plants on behalf of the Maldivian government.

The mango saplings donated for this project were sourced from the College of Agriculture in Vellayani, while the teak trees were procured from the Central Nursery in Kulathupuzha. According to Indian media reports, the plants have been specially packaged to ensure they are protected from any potential damage during transit to the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Kerala Minister stated that it is a privilege for Kerala to participate in such an initiative, which will further strengthen the close ties between the two nations.

These trees were gifted as part of a pledge made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official visit to the Maldives on July 25 last year, to support the nation's tree-planting initiative.
