The Maldivian government has refuted claims made by the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, regarding a decision to establish an Indian consulate in Addu City.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that recent news reports and social media posts regarding the establishment of consulates are inaccurate. These reports had claimed that the Maldivian Ambassador suggested both leaders had agreed to open a Maldivian consulate in Bengaluru and an Indian consulate in Addu City.
The government maintains that any decision regarding this matter must be reached through extensive consultations involving all relevant stakeholders. The statement further clarified that the Maldivian government has not yet made a definitive decision on the establishment of a foreign consulate in any island outside of Malé City.
Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, made these remarks during an interview with a local news outlet. He stated that the top leadership of both countries has reached an agreement to establish a Maldivian Consulate in Bengaluru and an Indian Consulate in Addu City.
The Indian High Commissioner also stated that India is committed to making every effort to implement all agreements reached under the 'Vision Document' signed between the two nations during President Muizzu's official visit to India in 2024.
