Maldives cannot remain isolated as if enclosed within a thatched wall; we must strengthen ties with our neighboring nations: Shahid

The Maldives is not a nation that can exist in isolation by building walls around itself, and it must strengthen its ties with neighboring countries, stated Abdulla Shahid, the President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and former foreign minister.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program to mark Independence Day, Shahid stated that previous Maldivian administrations have consistently maintained a robust foreign policy centered on fostering friendly relations with all nations.

Highlighting the importance of Maldives maintaining strong ties with all nations for regional peace, Shahid stated that the most beneficial path for the country is to avoid diplomatic friction with other states.

Noting that the PNC actively targeted India and mocked its Prime Minister before coming to power, Shahid stated that the party must face reality now that they have assumed office. He emphasized that they must accept that the Maldives is a nation that must coexist harmoniously with its neighbors.

Shahid noted that regardless of how much one attempts to incite hatred and discord, they will be forced to confront reality upon assuming power. He emphasized that the Maldives is not a nation that can simply be uprooted and relocated elsewhere.

No matter how much animosity is stirred or how many attempts are made to incite discord, once in power, one must confront the reality. That reality is that we must strengthen ties with our neighboring countries; this nation cannot simply be uprooted and moved elsewhere.

Shahid highlighted that the Maldives has achieved significant progress in the years since gaining independence. He noted that the country is now categorized among middle-income developing nations.

Speaking on the country's development projects, Shahid stated that securing loans to fund infrastructure initiatives is a necessary step for the Maldives. In his remarks, he emphasized the vital importance of maintaining strong international relations and avoiding global isolation to ensure the nation's continued progress.
