A young man has been taken into police custody following an assault on a woman inside a restaurant in the Maafannu district of Malé.
The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, August 22, 2026.
According to the police, they received a report of an ongoing altercation at a restaurant in Maafannu at approximately 11:00 p.m. that night.
Police stated that preliminary investigations suggest the incident was triggered by a man attacking a woman inside the restaurant.
Bystanders present at the scene attempted to intervene and stop the violence. However, the assailant also attacked those who tried to prevent the assault.
Furthermore, police reported that the restaurant's entrance was targeted during the unrest, resulting in significant structural damage.
A female employee working at the restaurant was also injured during the altercation. According to the police, she sustained various injuries, including swelling to her head after being struck during the assault.
