Police Seize Over MVR 120 Million Worth of Drugs in Seven Months
11 އޯގަސްޓު 2026 | އަންގާރަ 08:20Maldivian authorities seized 144 kilograms of narcotics with an estimated street value of MVR 121 million during more than 1,100 police operations conducted nationwide in the first seven months of this year. A total of 1,700 suspects were arrested during this period, and out of 1,533 cases investigated, 636 have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office for criminal charges.

The Maldives Police Service's Drug Enforcement Department has seized narcotics with an estimated street value exceeding MVR 121 million in operations conducted nationwide from January to July this year, according to the Head of Drug Enforcement, Superintendent of Police Ahmed Muslim.
During a press conference held to provide updates on ongoing anti-narcotics efforts, Ahmed Muslim revealed that over 530 operations were conducted in the Greater Male' Area during this period, while more than 600 operations were carried out across the atolls.
He noted that during these operations, more than 760 individuals were arrested in the Greater Male' area, while over a thousand people were taken into custody across the atolls. Furthermore, he stated that in the Greater Male' area alone, approximately 14,000 individuals have been stopped and searched on suspicion of drug-related offenses.
He revealed that operations conducted during this period led to the seizure of over 137 kilograms of narcotics in the Greater Male’ area, with the nationwide total exceeding 144 kilograms. Regarding alcohol-related offenses, he further noted that a total of 1,856 bottles of alcohol were confiscated.
He stated that operations conducted solely by the Police Drug Enforcement Department have resulted in the seizure of over 177 kilograms of narcotics and 845 bottles of alcohol. He further noted that the seized drugs have an estimated value exceeding MVR 120 million, while the street value of the confiscated alcohol is over MVR 960,000.
He noted that during this period, investigations were conducted into 560 cases in the Greater Male' area, out of a total of 1,533 cases nationwide. He further stated that 636 of those cases have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office for charges to be filed.
Furthermore, he stated that more than 7,300 locations across the Maldives have been searched in connection with drug-related offenses.
