Ministry Fails to Clarify Possible Suspension of Student Loan Repayments

10 އޯގަސްޓު 2026 | ހޯމަ 08:58

Concerns have emerged regarding the Ministry of Higher Education's failure to defer existing loan repayments for students transitioning from undergraduate to postgraduate studies. While the Ministry maintains that all loan recovery processes strictly adhere to gazetted regulations, it has stopped short of clarifying whether previous loan obligations will be officially suspended for those continuing their education.

Concerns are mounting among students and parents over the government's failure to disburse previously approved student loan payments for those seeking to pursue further studies.

Students and parents have been raising concerns regarding difficulties faced by graduates who, after completing their undergraduate degrees abroad through student loans, secure opportunities to pursue Master’s degrees. They report that these students are being hindered from utilizing subsequent loans to continue their education. Furthermore, parents claim that funds intended for Master’s degree programs are being diverted or deducted to settle outstanding balances from previous undergraduate loans.

During Sunday's episode of RaajjeTV's "Fashaairu" program, the Ministry of Education was contacted and questioned regarding whether existing student loans could be suspended.

In response, the Ministry stated that no new specific regulations have been established recently and that existing protocols remain in effect. However, it clarified that any outstanding payments must be settled, noting that specific procedures are in place for the repayment of previously issued loans.

Despite repeated inquiries, the Ministry has failed to clarify whether existing loans will be suspended. However, the Ministry stated that it will proceed in accordance with the officially gazetted regulations.

Since President Dr. Muizzu assumed office, recurring issues have emerged regarding the student loan scheme, with many aspiring students failing to secure funding and those currently enrolled facing persistent delays in receiving their allocated disbursements.
