Schools close for a 16-day break as first term of academic year concludes
Following the conclusion of the first academic term, schools are set to resume for the second term on August 2. While more than 77,000 students are enrolled this year, growing concerns have emerged among parents regarding the significant shortage of local teachers.

The first term of the academic year has concluded, marking the beginning of the school holidays.
Schools across Male' and the atolls concluded the first term of the academic year on Thursday, with students receiving their formal progress reports.
According to the academic calendar, the second term of the school year is scheduled to commence on August 2, 2026. This follows a 16-day break, which comes after students previously enjoyed an extended holiday period encompassing the final ten days of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holidays. Additionally, the mid-term break was observed from May 24 to May 30, 2026.
Furthermore, the year-end holidays are scheduled to take place from December 18, 2026, to January 12, 2027.
According to the Ministry of Education, more than 77,000 students are enrolled across 219 government schools for the current academic year. Furthermore, a total of 4,790 students have been granted placements in various schools to begin Grade 1 this year.
Furthermore, the teaching workforce comprises more than 6,516 local teachers and over 1,843 expatriate educators.
The shortage of Maldivian teachers remains a persistent challenge faced every year. Despite growing concerns over the scarcity of educators, many parents contend that a viable solution has yet to be found.
