Second term of the academic year officially commences

While the term is scheduled to conclude with the start of the annual holidays on December 18, parents continue to express concern over ongoing teacher shortages and are calling for a permanent solution to the issue.

Schools across the country have resumed classes for the second term today, following the conclusion of the first-term break of the academic year.
Schools went on break following the conclusion of the first term on July 16, 2026. The second term commenced on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
As students begin their 16-day break, both the Ministry of Education and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) have urged them to make the most of their holiday period responsibly.
Specifically, the public is encouraged to maintain a healthy diet, manage their weight within a healthy range, and make productive use of their time—even during holidays—by engaging in reading and staying physically active while avoiding habits detrimental to their health.
Furthermore, according to the academic calendar, the end-of-year holidays are scheduled to take place from December 18, 2026, to January 12, 2027.
According to the Ministry of Education, more than 77,000 students are enrolled across 219 government schools for the current academic year. Furthermore, 4,790 students have been newly admitted to Grade 1 at various schools this year.
Furthermore, the teaching workforce comprises more than 6,516 local teachers and over 1,843 expatriate educators.
The shortage of local teachers remains a recurring challenge every year. Despite growing concerns over the scarcity of educators, many parents express that a viable solution has yet to be found.
