Maldivian Artists Undervalued by Government, Exploited by Businesses

He highlighted that instead of being valued, artists are often exploited for minimal pay, and noted that the absence of corporate sponsorship has created significant challenges in hosting major events such as the National Film Awards.

Veteran artist and Chairman of the Maldives Society for Performing Arts (MSPA), Mohamed Rasheed (Dhara), has expressed deep concern over the lack of support from the government and the business community for the development of local artists. He lamented that performers are often treated as cheap labor, used for a pittance and then discarded.
Speaking on RaajjeTV's "Fas Suvaalu" program, veteran artist Rasheed stated that the association he leads is working extensively to feature Maldivian films in international film festivals and to secure international awards for individual artists. However, Rasheed noted that despite these significant efforts, they have not received a helping hand from any party to support these initiatives.
Rasheed stated that although the second MSB Film Awards is scheduled to be held on August 26, the organizers have yet to secure a sponsor. He noted that every entity approached for sponsorship has declined the request.
Rasheed highlighted that while many are eager to utilize the talents of artists, there is a distinct lack of support for initiatives aimed at their professional development. He further noted that there is a reluctance to provide cooperation to those working towards the advancement of the artist community.
Local artists are raising concerns over the practices of major Maldivian corporations, which utilize their creative works for advertising and promotion while offering only minimal compensation in return.

Rasheed noted that while there are those in the Maldives who "exploit" artists, there is a distinct lack of individuals sincerely dedicated to appreciating their talent and advancing the industry. He stated that this situation poses significant obstacles to the professional growth of Maldivian artists.
The most recent Film Awards were held on August 23, 2025. At the time, Rashid noted that no government institution had provided any assistance for the ceremony. Rashid stated that the government treated the MSPA very unfairly during the film festival. He further noted that relevant government authorities had ordered the removal of promotional posters for the event that were displayed on the walls of the Olympus Cinema.
