Minister Ihusaan to Face Questions Over Himmafushi Rehab Center

A motion has been submitted to the People’s Majlis to summon the Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan, for questioning regarding the deteriorating conditions at the Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in K. Himmafushi. The motion alleges that the facility's current state is so poor that it compromises the human dignity of those seeking treatment there.

In relation to this matter, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), the Member of Parliament for the North Galolhu constituency, submitted a formal letter to the Parliament Secretariat on Saturday outlining the questions he intends to pose to the Minister.

Among the inquiries posed by MP Ibrahim to the Minister is a request for clarification regarding the current state of infrastructure and resources at drug treatment and rehabilitation centers across the Maldives. Specifically, the member questioned whether these facilities maintain a hygienic environment suitable for patients and whether the existing treatment programs meet acceptable standards. Furthermore, the inquiry seeks to determine if there is an adequate number of medical staff and counselors currently employed at these centers.

The Minister is also set to be questioned regarding ongoing efforts to improve the quality of food provided to individuals receiving treatment at these centers, as well as the condition of the restrooms and sleeping quarters. Furthermore, the member's inquiry includes seeking clarification on whether any new projects are planned or currently underway to upgrade the facilities at these centers.

In the letter, the member highlighted concerns that current treatments are not based on modern scientific evidence, noting that complaints have been received regarding the infringement of patients' fundamental rights. Consequently, the member stated that the Minister must be held accountable regarding efforts to establish a treatment system that meets international standards, incorporating both psychological care and social rehabilitation.

Furthermore, the member inquired about the efforts being made to provide necessary training and capacity building for staff at these centers, and whether the treatment protocols are formally documented. The member also emphasized that every individual has the right to receive treatment that aligns with the Narcotics Act and international human rights standards.

Member Ibrahim stated that the matter submitted for ministerial questioning is a critical issue requiring an urgent resolution.
