Education Ministry fails to deposit employee pension contributions for over five months!

A teacher at Faafu Atoll School informed RaajjeMV that pension contributions have not been deposited since September 2024, noting that the issue has already been brought to the attention of the Human Resources department. While the Ministry of Education has yet to comment on the matter, similar concerns regarding unpaid pension contributions have recently surfaced across several other state-owned enterprises.

It has been more than five months since the Ministry of Education last deposited pension contributions for its employees into the Pension Fund.

A teacher at the Faafu Atoll School informed RaajjeMV that pension contributions were last deposited in September 2025. Since then, no further payments have been made, and the matter has been brought to the attention of the Human Resources department.

However, no resolution has been reached to date. Despite efforts to clarify the reasons behind the failure to deposit the funds, no response has been received so far.

He stated that, in addition to teachers, various employees working under the Ministry of Education have also been affected by this issue.

Employees contribute seven percent of their basic salary toward the pension fund. However, while these deductions are being made from their paychecks, the Ministry of Education has failed to deposit the funds into the pension accounts.

Efforts to obtain a comment regarding this matter from the Minister of Education, Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to phone calls. Additionally, the Ministry has yet to provide an official statement.

Concerns have escalated over the Ministry of Education's failure to deposit employee pension contributions into the Pension Fund. This follows a similar controversy in January involving the state-owned Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), where staff contributions were also not remitted. Furthermore, a significant issue arose last October regarding the Road Development Corporation (RDC), after it was revealed that pension deductions withheld from employees' salaries had not been deposited into the fund.

Under the law, every Maldivian employee and their employer are mandated to make contributions to the national pension scheme. Individuals can monitor their contribution amounts, payment dates, and investment returns through the Pension Portal.
