Behind the mask of sovereignty lies the same old unfiltered dictator

He is Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the ex-Housing Minister, the former Mayor of Malé, and now the Head of State sitting as the President of the Maldives.

He stands as the supreme commander of the political party boasting the largest membership rolls and the exact figure who presently commands an overwhelming parliamentary majority, effectively pulling the strings across all three branches of state power.

Nothing about him has shifted; not even the smallest fraction of his true character has evolved.

His temperament stays stubbornly identical to what it has always been, maintaining that exact same rigid posture.

However, this time, that posture was placed on a completely different stage: the official ceremony commemorating the 61st Independence Day of the Maldives. This was a direct address aimed at the entire nation, delivered right in front of a massive crowd on the ground and beamed across the globe through television broadcasts and social media platforms.

A podium fueled by indignation

The overall delivery of this Independence Day address and the specific way he framed his statements betrayed an unmistakable air of indignation. The display came across as a calculated move to shrink the importance of everyone else.

He spent ample time railing against the alleged mass thefts and grand corruption attributed to past governments and their leadership, painting a picture where the nation was supposedly forced into bondage while detailing steps he alleged actively degraded Islam and stripped away national sovereignty.

His whole narrative framed his predecessors as having accomplished zero items of real substance, acting as though absolutely nothing of genuine value was ever completed prior to his own reign.

There is zero necessity to catalog those past milestones here; admitting the accomplishments of the prior regime might be rather uncomfortable for the sitting president.

Regardless, that is not the primary point of concern. To lay it out directly, the real issue rests in the scoffing, disrespectful manner he adopted while dissecting the supposed downfalls and "crimes" of previous regimes.

While boasting about his own administration's claimed triumphs, he repeatedly relied on sarcastic jabs, throwing around phrases like "what couldn't be done in five years," "what those people failed to do," and "things they just kept talking about without action."

The transparency illusion

On top of that sit assertions that clash directly with cold reality. Without picking apart every single claim, one particular statement stands out: his declaration that his cabinet is running with a degree of openness never before witnessed under any prior ruler.

He insisted that he conceals nothing whatsoever and asserted that his executive branch remains the sole administration in history to answer 100 percent of Right to Information (RTI) inquiries.

By spouting this claim, he launched a heavy insult at the Information Commissioner, smearing him as a mere political operative placed by the opposition who operates strictly under their commands.

Spewing that kind of mockery at the Information Commissioner is frankly beneath the dignity expected of a president.

However, despite all these grand declarations of openness, the government still refuses to reveal the actual count of political appointees, a tally that used to sit openly on the President’s Office website before being quietly wiped away.

On top of that, historical news records have been hidden from public view on that same portal.

To make the situation even more ridiculous, this marks the absolute first President’s Office in history to be dragged into court for suppressing public data, as well as the very first to get hit with a financial penalty for disobeying a direct mandate issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Recycled rhetoric and foreign fumbles

There is no point in dragging this breakdown out any further, since digging deeper only exposes an even bigger web of contradictions.

When you strip it all back, what everyone watched was a brand of political posturing that mirrored his original push for the presidency. It brought back the exact imagery and emotional buttons of the "India Out" campaign, which served as his main weapon to grab power.

Fresh off his trip to China after taking the oath, and clearly riding high on what he interpreted as "green signals," his speech adopted an aggressively combative posture toward our immediate neighbor, India.

It was a massive display of chest-thumping rhetoric, a mindset where he views himself as the only player who matters, while writing off everyone else as completely irrelevant.

In the final analysis, I won't reiterate the former Deputy Mayor of Malé City, Shamau Shareef’s remarks, commenting in the wake of the address that "no leader with such low ethical standards has ever governed this country."

Even so, nobody can deny that this particular Independence Day handed the general public an unvarnished look at Muizzu’s true political persona.
