President sends condolences following the passing of Sheikh Ismail Mohamed
The President has expressed profound national grief over the passing of Sheikh Ismail Mohamed, honoring his distinguished contributions to Islamic education and the nurturing of generations of students. A prominent scholar who dedicated over half a century to religious advocacy, the Sheikh was the first individual to receive an honorary doctorate from a Maldivian higher education institution and was the founder of Madhrasathul Thaiba, where he laid the academic foundation for numerous scholars. In his message, the President extended sincere condolences to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the deceased to be granted eternal paradise.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his condolences following the passing of Sheikh Ismail Mohamed, a distinguished recipient of the National Award of Honour for his outstanding contributions to Islamic awareness, religious service, and education. Sheikh Ismail Mohamed passed away at the age of 85 during the early hours of this morning, following a prolonged illness.
Upon receiving the news, the President shared a message on the social media platform X, expressing that the passing of Sheikh Ismail Mohamed has brought profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss.
In his message, the President highlighted the significant contributions made by the late Honorable Sheikh Ismail Mohamed in raising religious awareness. He noted that the Sheikh worked extensively to propagate Islamic knowledge across the Maldives and played a pivotal role in securing higher education opportunities for numerous Maldivian students to study religion abroad. The President further remarked that the late Sheikh Ismail Mohamed served as a mentor to many individuals who have rendered, and continue to render, distinguished service to the nation.
The President highlighted that the late Sheikh Ismail Mohamed was a prolific scholar who translated numerous religious texts into Dhivehi, authoring more than eight books, several of which have been published. He further noted that the late Ismail Mohamed stood among the foremost religious scholars produced by the Maldives.
The late Sheikh Ismail Mohamed founded "Madhrasathul Thaiba," an educational institution dedicated to teaching Islam to Maldivian students through the Arabic language. Throughout his tenure, he provided Islamic education to a vast number of students at the school. The institution, which was originally built on the site where Masjid Hassan Izzuddeen (Thaiba Mosque) now stands in Maafannu, served as the academic foundation for many of the prominent religious scholars currently serving in the Maldives.
The late Sheikh Ismail Mohamed dedicated over half a century to enhancing religious awareness and disseminating Islamic knowledge among the Maldivian people. In recognition of his invaluable contributions to the promotion of Islamic scholarship, the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate. Notably, Sheikh Ismail Mohamed was the first individual to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate by a higher education institution in the Maldives.
Concluding his message of condolence, the President extended his deepest sympathies to the family of the late Honorable Sheikh Ismail Mohamed. He prayed that Almighty Allah grant the deceased His pleasure and forgiveness, and bestow upon him the highest blessings and mercy in Paradise.
