Although the Maldives is included among the toughest countries for journalism, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assured his commitment to maintaining media freedom, independence, and responsibility in the island nation.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the president shed light on the significant role journalists play in protecting democracy and human dignity, and upholding justice.

This year's theme for World Press Freedom Day is "Reporting in a Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Free Press and Media." This year’s theme showcases the vibrant nature of media freedom while highlighting the opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Referring to this, President Muizzu stated that if used transparently, AI could be a tool to automate information analysis, enhance content distribution services, and even combat misinformation.

Further, he highlighted the work being done with national and international partners such as the Press Freedom Coalition and non-profit organizations to increase media literacy, raise awareness about AI products, and encourage the use of AI in line with journalistic ethics.

He noted the ongoing efforts to strengthen legal protections for free journalism, establish ways to address digital manipulation issues, and conduct inclusive consultations related to media and professionalism.

As the world faces the opportunities and challenges of the AI era, the president assured his commitment to fulfilling the shared responsibility of protecting and maintaining press freedom, which is a pillar of democracy.

Despite President Muizzu's remarks along these lines, the Maldives still remains among the most hostile countries for press.
