Transparency Maldives has stated that the imprisonment of two local journalists under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration constitutes a severe assault on the fundamental principles of democratic governance.
Transparency Maldives has condemned the imprisonment of two *Adhadhu* journalists, Leevan Ali Naseer and Mohamed Shahuzan, on May 12, 2026, calling for their immediate release. The organization further noted that the journalists were denied adequate opportunity to seek legal counsel, raising serious concerns regarding the right to a fair trial and the fundamental protections guaranteed by the Constitution.
Transparency Maldives stated that such actions undermine press freedom and erode the mechanisms of accountability within the country's democratic framework, describing them as a significant assault on the fundamental principles of democratic governance.
The Criminal Court has sentenced journalist Leevan to 10 days in prison over a news article published in Adhadhu. Meanwhile, Shahuzan was sentenced to 15 days in prison and fined MVR 25,000 in connection with a case involving questioning President Muizzu.
The imprisonment of these two journalists has drawn widespread condemnation from local and international organizations, political parties, former presidents, senior political figures, and members of the general public. These groups are expressing deep concern and calling for the immediate release of the two journalists. Many have characterized this move as a severe assault on press freedom and freedom of expression by the current administration. Critics further contend that these actions are a deliberate attempt to intimidate the public.
