Allegations of intimidation against Maldivians in Sri Lanka linked to the President's visit: Foreign Ministry states no such reports have been received
Complaints are mounting among Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka regarding increasing difficulties in obtaining visas and US dollars, with some alleging that authorities are specifically targeting government critics. While political parties have expressed grave concern that these actions could jeopardize the safety of Maldivian citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains it has received no such reports. Meanwhile, accounts have emerged of Maldivian families facing psychological distress due to the conduct of Sri Lankan police during these enforcement measures.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it has no information regarding reports of measures being taken against critics of the government living in Sri Lanka, coinciding with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's ongoing visit to the country.
Since the current administration took office, Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka have reportedly faced significant challenges in obtaining visas and accessing US dollars. As public dissatisfaction grows over these difficulties, reports indicate that the Maldivian High Commission, acting on government directives, has begun targeting individuals who have spoken out about these issues.
Some of these individuals have shared their experiences with RaajjeTV. Maldivians who have resided in Sri Lanka for extended periods without any criminal record expressed that it is uncivilized and beneath the dignity of the Maldivian government to request the Sri Lankan police to carry out such actions. They further noted that such conduct could shift the perspective of the Sri Lankan police toward Maldivians, raising concerns that it may compromise their safety and security. Additionally, they shared that their young children have been left traumatized and living in fear.
When questioned about the matter on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program, a Foreign Ministry official stated that they had not received any such information. The official added that they would look into the matter.
