Aminath Shirna, who previously served as the State Minister at the Ministry of Health, was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) on Monday.
The Ministry of Health has officially announced Shirna's appointment to the position, sharing a post on social media to welcome her to the role.
The position of CEO at the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) became vacant following the appointment of the former incumbent, Heena Waleed, as the Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage on May 14. The top post at NSPA has remained vacant since the day Heena was reassigned to her new role as part of the cabinet reshuffle initiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Prior to assuming the role of CEO at NSPA, Shirna served as a Minister of State at the Ministry of Health, where she oversaw the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Dhamanaveshi, and the Blood Bank. Following her appointment as State Minister early in the current administration on December 13, 2023, her initial mandate focused on the management of Maldivian Blood Services and the Thalassemia Center.
However, Shirna faced intense public scrutiny as administrative issues at the Thalassemia Center led to persistent shortages of essential medication and treatment delays. During that period, several families staged protests within the center, calling for her resignation. Following these events, she was removed from her responsibilities at the Thalassemia Center as part of an administrative restructuring.
Before entering politics, Shirna had a long and distinguished career in the healthcare sector. She served as a nurse for 23 years and held several senior positions within the nursing department at IGMH.
