Fayyaz and Meekail oppose postponing MDP Chairperson election
Despite a proposal by MDP's interim chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, to postpone the party's internal election, several key figures have voiced strong opposition to the delay. While Ghafoor cited the party's best interests and current financial situation as reasons for the postponement, prominent members including Fayyaz Ismail and Meekail Naseem have called for the election to proceed on its original schedule. The candidates emphasized that interfering with the election timeline is unacceptable and urged the party to adhere to its established calendar.

Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem—who is contesting for the party’s chairperson position—have expressed their opposition to postponing the MDP chairperson election, currently scheduled for the 12th of next month.
Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa has proposed to the party’s national congress to hold the chairperson election following the presidential primary. He put forward this proposal in a message sent to an internal party group. He stated that the party currently lacks the necessary funds to conduct the election. Furthermore, he cautioned that holding the election on the previously scheduled date could jeopardize the party's internal stability.
Ghafoor stated that the chairperson election must be postponed to safeguard the party's internal interests and to ensure uninterrupted efforts in holding the government accountable.
In a post on X regarding the matter, Meekail stated that any attempt to delay the chairperson election is unacceptable to him and the party's general membership. He emphasized that the election must proceed according to the previously announced schedule and urged officials not to manipulate the process to favor specific individuals.
Former Chairperson Fayyaz stated that there is no reason to delay the election, asserting that the party has means to secure the necessary funding. He called for the election to be held on its originally scheduled date.
In addition to Meekail, former President Mohamed Nasheed is also contesting the MDP chairperson election. Both President Nasheed and Meekail are currently conducting vigorous campaign activities in Male' and various islands across the country.
