Post-mortem to be conducted to determine cause of death for Naushad while in police custody
Police have decided to conduct an autopsy on Ahmed Naushad to determine his cause of death after he was found collapsed in a cell at Male’ Custodial Clinic and pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. While the incident has been reported to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC), concerns have been raised regarding delays in notifying the family. Police are currently conducting a further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police have announced that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death of Ahmed Naushad, who passed away while in police custody.
Naushad passed away on Wednesday evening while in police custody at the Male’ Custodial Facility. According to the police, he was discovered collapsed in his cell on the evening of April 15, 2026, and was subsequently transported to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Police stated that according to information provided by the hospital, Naushad was already deceased at the time of his arrival.
The family has also disclosed that there was a delay in providing them with this information.
Police stated that since the individual passed away while in custody, a decision has been made to conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Information regarding this incident has now been shared with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
The police are currently investigating the matter.
