Former Speaker of the People's Majlis, Mohamed Aslam, has asserted that the Constitution is not a plaything, stating that the public must deliver a resounding "no" to both the government and the upcoming referendum.
He made these remarks while speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Noonekey" campaign program. Aslam emphasized that the Constitution is not a plaything and asserted that the government should not be able to amend it at will whenever they desire.
In my view, the time has come to say "no" to the government. We must issue a resounding rejection of this administration because it has utterly failed. The Constitution is not a plaything to be trifled with.Former Speaker of the People's Majlis, Mohamed Aslam
Aslam further stated that all powers of the state are currently being consolidated under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and that the public must reject this trend. He noted that the separation between the legislative and executive branches has now become completely blurred.
Aslam, who was also involved in the drafting of the Constitution, further stated that the Constitution of the Maldives serves as the fundamental framework for the nation's governance. He emphasized that the Constitution must be upheld and followed in a specific order. Aslam also noted that if a comprehensive change were to be made to the established hierarchy of powers within the Constitution, it would necessitate a complete overhaul of the Constitution or the entire system.
