MP for Inguraidhoo constituency and Parliamentary Group Leader of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Ibrahim Falah, has been urged not to interfere in the land and housing affairs of Malé residents.
During a meeting between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and residents of Galolhu district of the capital city, a local resident, while addressing the gathering, specifically called on Ibrahim Falah, along with other lawmakers, to refrain from interfering in land and housing matters concerning Malé residents.
The appeal directed at Falah is widely understood to be a response to remarks he made regarding land plots and flats during a People’s Majlis sitting held on 28 October 2023.
At that sitting, Falah stated that he was not speaking in his capacity as Majority Leader, but expressing his personal view as a Maldivian citizen. He said that plots of land that were given away for free should be reclaimed by the state, with compensation provided if a wall had been built around the plot or if a house had been constructed on it.
Falah has repeatedly maintained that the decision to distribute plots of land for free in the Greater Malé Region constituted an injustice and that such plots should be taken back by the state. He has continued to appeal to the government to reclaim all such plots, compensate for any work carried out on them and return them to state ownership.
His remarks have triggered strong opposition from many residents of Malé City. In addition to this, several citizens have expressed criticism on social media regarding Falah’s statements on land and housing issues raised in the Majlis.
Further controversy arose when lawmakers submitted their financial statements and it surfaced that Falah had acquired four additional plots of land that did not appear in his financial disclosure. This revelation prompted widespread criticism.
Falah has also expressed dissatisfaction with media headlines related to his financial statement when it was made public. According to the financial disclosure, Falah earns more than MVR three million annually from rental income derived from properties.
