Employees of STELCO have expressed dissatisfaction over the arrangements for overtime pay during the final ten days of Ramadan.
Sources who spoke to RaajjeMV stated that despite the government being closed for the final ten days of Ramadan, some STELCO employees are still required to work their regular shift duties. Consequently, these employees argue that all hours worked during this period should be calculated entirely as overtime. However, staff members who spoke to this outlet noted they have been informed that overtime will only be paid for hours worked beyond their standard Ramadan shift duration, excluding the special holiday status of the final ten days.
Employees have expressed concerns that this constitutes discrimination between shift workers and other staff members. They maintain that since the government has declared the final ten days of Ramadan as public holidays, those required to report for duty to provide essential services should be entitled to full overtime pay for the duration of their shifts.
STELCO has stated that its overtime policy for employees remains consistent with the procedures followed during previous months of Ramadan, asserting that there is no discrimination among its staff. The government had previously announced that civil servants reporting to work during the final ten days of Ramadan would be entitled to an attendance allowance.
The government has announced that despite the closure of state offices during the final ten days of Ramadan, arrangements will be made to ensure that essential public services continue to be provided through protocols established by the respective institutions and offices.
