Handover of Kendhikulhudhoo water and sewerage system stalled due to Ministry's failure to provide necessary information
Although 90 percent of the water and sewerage project in N. Kendhikulhudhoo has been completed, the official handover remains stalled as the local council refuses to sign the necessary documentation. The council stated that the delay is due to the Ministry's failure to provide a clear list of households designated for service connections, a situation that has sparked significant public outcry and growing concern among residents over the delayed commencement of essential services.

The President of the Kendhikulhudhoo Council, Mohamed Rauf, has stated that the signing of documents to officially take over the island's water and sewerage system has been delayed due to the Ministry's failure to provide the necessary information.
The water and sewerage project in N. Kendhikulhudhoo was initiated by the previous administration, with the vast majority of the work already completed. However, the facility has yet to be officially inaugurated. Regarding the delay, the President of the Kendhikulhudhoo Island Council, Mohamed Rauf, noted that the water and sewerage project was among the very first initiatives launched during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
Rauf stated that despite several delays throughout the project, 90 percent of the work had already been completed by the time the government changed. He further noted that after the current administration took office, they pledged to complete the remaining work within two months.
The contractor encountered numerous challenges, including financial constraints and various other issues. However, the project is now complete, commissioned, and ready to commence service. Although we were requested to attend and sign the necessary documentation, we are currently withholding our signature. We have yet to be informed of the exact number of households or plots that require service connections under this project. Once the Ministry provides this specific information, we will proceed with signing the documents.Mohamed Rauf, President of the Kendhikulhudhoo Island Council
Rauf stated that at the inception of the water and sewerage project, a specific number of households were designated to receive connections. He noted that the council had engaged in numerous discussions regarding the project, following a surge of complaints from residents over the delays in service delivery.
Rauf stated that the prolonged delay in services has caused immense public concern, noting that many residents have already moved into homes built on the allocated plots despite the lack of essential utilities.
