"Ran Reendhoo" run to be held in Malé on July 25

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to hold its "Ran Reendhoo" run in Malé City on July 25, after the government denied permission to hold the event in Hulhumalé in connection with the party's 20th anniversary.
At a press conference held on Wednesday, former MP and former Chairperson of MDP, Mariya Ahmed Didi, said that Maldivians want a system where political activities can be conducted through a competitive political party system, and that the system exists in the country.
However, she said that the country's president, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is obstructing such activities and condemned this action. Mariya said that President Muizzu is worried about MDP running with torches because of the lies that have been circulated and because none of his promises have been fulfilled.
Commenting on the event, Mariya stated that while such activities tend to garner significant public support, and that the president no longer has any popularity.
In addition to this, Mariya said that the government is preparing extensively for July 26, claiming it to be for Independence Day preparations. She also said that after denying permission for the run planned for July 18, the government’s response to the run to be held on Majeedhee Magu in Malé on July 25 will serve as a measure of the freedoms currently afforded to Maldivian citizens.
Mariya said that President Muizzu should fulfill the promises he made to the people without obstructing the rights granted to citizens by law.
