President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the next two years have been designated for the implementation of special measures aimed at advancing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
In a post shared on social media, President Muizzu said the decision followed concerns raised by entrepreneurs from the SME sector during a meeting held on 17 December 2025. He said the Cabinet of Ministers discussed these concerns last Wednesday, focusing on ensuring favorable outcomes for initiatives included in the government’s manifesto for SME development, as well as various ongoing government efforts related to the sector. According to the president, numerous decisions were taken during that Cabinet meeting.
While reiterating that the coming two years would be dedicated to implementing special measures to support small and medium-sized businesses, Muizzu stated that some of these measures would begin to be implemented from 1 January 2026.
Among the key concerns raised by entrepreneurs during their meeting with the president was the issue of unpaid government bills. The total value of these outstanding payments was reported to amount to several billion Maldivian Rufiyaa.
In response to this issue, Muizzu said efforts are underway to settle the most overdue payments by the time the fasting month of Ramadan approaches. He also stated that arrangements would be made to address these outstanding bills in a way that would simultaneously provide a solution for unpaid dues owed to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
