This has highlighted a systemic failure that continues to endanger lives and calls for a swift and decisive response to address the ongoing issues in the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

A resident of Phase 1 in Hulhumalé told the president during Monday's meeting that the health system has failed.
A member of the public has shared a stark and deeply concerning account of the ongoing failures within the Maldives' healthcare system, specifically highlighting serious issues with STO Pharmacy’s services.
The individual's testimony came during a meeting held by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with residents of Hulhumalé Phase I on Sunday evening.
In just two minutes, a young individual, who has been battling Crohn's disease, a severe inflammatory bowel condition, since 2017, detailed their personal experience with the system’s significant shortcomings. With palpable emotion, they described how a colonoscopy performed at IGMH in 2022 led to a bowel perforation, resulting in several instances where parts of their intestine required external management.
The individual explained that, due to their compromised immune system, they depend on essential injections and medications for survival. However, acquiring these critical treatments has become a struggle. Despite their repeated requests, the medications, which are supposed to be administered every two months, are often delayed by up to three months, and when they do arrive, the dosage is frequently incorrect.
Their health recently took a severe downturn, requiring emergency surgery and the removal of a section of their bowel. Despite this, the individual expressed their deep frustration that no resolution has been found to address the persistent issues surrounding the procurement of their life-saving treatments.
Adding to the grim picture, the individual recounted that during their treatment journey, multiple scans conducted in the Maldives failed to detect the extent of damage to their bowel, raising concerns about either the failure to identify the condition or a lack of proper oversight by medical professionals. The fact that such a critical health issue went unnoticed despite repeated scans underscores the deeply troubling state of the healthcare system.
In light of these harrowing experiences, the individual called for urgent reforms to the healthcare system, stressing the need for change to prevent further suffering for others in the same situation.
Their appeal highlighted a systemic failure that continues to endanger lives and calls for a swift and decisive response to address the ongoing issues in the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
