Minister of Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has apologized for publicly disclosing the personal information of a single mother who complained that she was denied assistance from the Zakat Fund, alleging that she was refused aid because she had money in her account.

Taking to social media, Shaheem said it was not his intention to reveal anyone’s personal information and explained that he shared the details because the woman's statements about Zakat were misleading.

He wrote that he holds human emotions in high regard and apologized if his remarks were misinterpreted or if private information was “indeed” disclosed.

Shaheem stated that his post was intended to clarify that only individuals who are rightfully eligible according to Shari’ah are included in the registry of the poor, and to affirm that staff administering the Zakat system in the Maldives carry out their duties with honesty. He also assured that no one would be treated unfairly by the Zakat Fund.

The incident stemmed from a rally held in Villingili on Sunday night, where President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with residents.

During the event, a single mother raised concerns about not receiving assistance from the Zakat Fund. In response, Shaheem revealed extensive personal information about her.

He disclosed the amount she received from Zakat House last year, the monthly state aid she receives as a single mother, her total earnings including her salary, and the amount she had saved.

Following the post, Shaheem faced significant public criticism. Many described his actions as very low-level and argued that such behavior was inappropriate for a minister. Several also pointed out that revealing personal information is a legal offense.

As criticism intensified, Shaheem deleted the post. However, screenshots spread widely on social media, and criticism continues.

In connection with the incident, many have raised broader questions about the policies governing Zakat Fund assistance and whether these policies are being applied fairly.
