MP for North Galolhu constituency Mohamed “Kudoo” Ibrahim has proposed an amendment to classify the act of damaging mosques as a terrorist offense.
He submitted an amendment to Act No. 2015/32, the Prevention of Terrorism Act, to the People’s Majlis on Monday.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, the lawmaker highlighted that incidents of damage to mosques, although not widely publicized, have become common, and this recurring pattern prompted him to propose the bill.
He reiterated that such damage does not always make headlines, yet has become a frequent occurrence that must be addressed without delay.
The bill cites the need to curb repeated and increasingly common acts of damage to mosques in a nation inhabited entirely by Muslims, noting that Article 10 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives establishes Islam as the religion of the state.
It was further stressed that such acts undermine the sanctity of mosques, and maintaining this sanctity is a fundamental aspect of respecting Islam.
The proposal also shed light on the lawmaker’s view that these acts should be brought within the scope of terrorist offenses.
