Two individuals have been arrested for attempting to steal from a mosque in the congested capital Malé City.

Taking to Twitter following the incident, Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu revealed that the thieves was caught with the help of CCTV cameras installed across the mosques in the capital.

As such, he noted that two individuals who were attempting to steal from Jalaaluddeen Mosque, were caught by city council officials who were monitoring the CCTV cameras installed for security purposes.

Officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrived at the scene shortly after it was reported.

Muizzu went on to urge the public to help authorities ensure the peace and security of mosques, are upheld.

The city council installed CCTV cameras at 39 locations including mosques and parks across the city, at a time complaints linked to mosques becoming a hub for drug addicts and other petty crimes, surfaced.

Ensuring 24-hour surveillance and installing CCTV cameras across mosques, was a pledge by the council.
