Fuvahmulah water crisis
MDP urges gov’t to immediately resolve Fuvahmulah water crisis
MDP criticized the government for prioritizing ruling party activities over essential services, stating proper preventive measures could have avoided the water crisis
MDP called for immediate restoration of clean water supply and long-term measures to ensure uninterrupted service to Fuvahmulah City residents
The government’s inability to restore supply within the timeline exposes its incompetence

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has voiced serious concern over the prolonged lack of clean water in Fuvahmulah City and has urged the government to address the issue without further delay.

In a statement released on Thursday, the party described the many days without access to clean water as deeply troubling.

It emphasized that clean water is a basic human right and noted that, despite repeated concerns raised by residents and the City Council regarding ongoing water disruptions, the relevant government bodies and Fenaka Corporation, responsible for providing water services, have failed to give adequate attention to the matter.

MDP argued that the government’s approach reflects a preference for diverting utility company budgets toward promoting activities of the ruling party instead of allocating funds to ensure uninterrupted delivery of essential services. According to the party, the hardship facing residents could have been avoided had proper preventive measures been implemented earlier.

MDP further stated that, at a time when Fuvahmulah’s water services have collapsed and residents are deprived of basic necessities, the government’s inability to restore supply within the timelines it announced exposes its incompetence and exacerbates an already difficult situation.

The party has called on the government to ensure immediate provision of clean water to Fuvahmulah City residents and to take all necessary steps to guarantee an uninterrupted water supply going forward.
