Fuvahmulah water crisis: gov’t misses deadline to restore supply, situation remains unresolved

The government has failed to restore water services in Fuvahmulah City within the promised timeframe, leaving residents in prolonged hardship as the citywide crisis continues without resolution.

Despite Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed’s assurance that the water system issues would be resolved and supply restored within six hours, more than twenty hours have passed with no progress.

Residents remain without access to water, demanding the immediate and proper restoration of this essential service.

In a post on ‘X’ on Tuesday, Heena had stated that water distribution would resume within six hours, following confirmation of water safety. However, the service has yet to return to normal.

Fuvahmulah City Deputy Mayor Mohamed Fikury said the government has not provided any updates to the council, leaving officials and residents uncertain about when the supply will be restored. He indicated that inquiries should be directed to the Presidential Spokesperson.

Heena has not offered any explanation for the government’s failure to meet the announced deadline, nor has she responded to phone calls seeking clarification.

Meanwhile, public frustration continues to escalate in Fuvahmulah, with protests breaking out across the city. Demonstrators have expressed anger over the government’s inaction and are calling for the resignation of the Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation, the state utility company responsible for the water supply.
