Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, widely regarded as the driving force behind Hoarafushi’s modern development in Haa Alif atoll, has been presented with a “Special Service Shield” in recognition of his contributions to the island’s transformation.

The honor was conferred during an official ceremony held to mark Hoarafushi Day, organized by the Hoarafushi Council. The event, held on Thursday night at the island’s harbor region, saw Former President Solih attend as the chief guest. The shield was presented to him by the president of the Hoarafushi Council, Mohamed Waheed.

The council noted that the award recognizes Solih as the true architect of Hoarafushi’s progress, whose leadership ushered in a new era of development through a range of projects that advanced the island’s infrastructure and quality of life.

During Solih’s administration, Hoarafushi underwent significant transformation. The most notable achievement was the completion of the Hoarafushi Airport, a landmark project that expanded economic opportunities and enhanced connectivity for residents. The airport’s impact has been evident in the growth of local businesses and new avenues for income generation.

In addition to this, extensive infrastructure development took place on the island. Eleven roads were asphalted and upgraded to modern standards, while a number of public facilities, including an ice plant, a Juvenile Justice Building, a volleyball court, a football field, a new court building, a pre-school, three parks and a ferry terminal were constructed during Solih’s tenure.

Several projects initiated under the previous administration of the now-opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), however, have reportedly stalled under the current government. Among these are the nearly completed glass-bottled water plant, the new council office building, the Fenaka office, and the construction of a new hospital for Hoarafushi.

Solih’s tenure was marked by widespread development initiatives across the Maldives, with similar recognition previously awarded to him by AA. Bodufolhudhoo Council for his service. His administration emphasized equitable development across all islands, regardless of population size, through major projects such as land reclamation, water and sewerage systems and other essential services.

Reports indicate that the suspension of several of these initiatives by the current administration has raised public concern, particularly in communities where work had been progressing rapidly.
