The Island Council in Feeali island of Faafu atoll has officially inaugurated a newly developed outdoor volleyball court, a project initiated and funded entirely through the council’s own revenue.
The court was formally opened on Thursday evening in a special ceremony attended by several notable figures, including former Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Abdulla Shahid, and former Vice President Faisal Naseem. Also present were former MP for Bilehdhoo constituency Ahmed Haleem, members of the MDP National Congress, and prominent residents of Feeali.
Speaking at the event, Feeali Council President Moosa Ahmed described the new court as a dedicated sports facility for the youth of the island. He emphasized that the project was a reflection of the council's commitment to community development and was financed exclusively from the council’s own income.
Moosa highlighted that the successful implementation of the project was made possible due to the financial and land-use autonomy granted to local councils under the Decentralization Act introduced by the previous government. He noted that this empowerment has enabled councils like Feeali's to take meaningful, independent steps toward local development.
The project was contracted to Tech, a private company, and cost the council over MVR one million.
In addition to this initiative, the previous government had also launched a project to build an indoor volleyball court on the island. Feeali has a strong reputation for volleyball, with the island producing many skilled players over the years. The establishment of the new court is expected to further support the growth of the sport in the community.
