The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has failed to answer questions regarding Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed’s claims regarding the involvement of four others in her case.
21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed was found fallen from the ninth floor of H. Fentenoy, onto the roof of H. Mithaaz in the early hours of April 18.
Regarding the incident, Yumnu’s family recently revealed that Yumnu confirmed the presence of four additional people at Fentenoy, the night of the incident.
However, when RaajjeMV reached out for a comment from the police institution in connection with these claims, the police failed to provide answers.
Yumnu’s sibling recently gave an interview on behalf of the family, providing information from the victim’s side for the first time regarding the incident. As such, the family revealed that no government institution has conducted any kind of investigation into the incident so far. The family went on to cite Yumnu having revealed that she had been to Fentenoy, before as well.
Refuting claims by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) that Yumnu “fell on her own”, the family asserted that she would not do such a thing by herself.
Yumnu has said that besides Raud, who has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in Yumnu's fall, there were four other people in the house. Yumnu is to have said that when she fell, she was left there. Yumnu's family has also said that the police released information about the case without taking Yumnu's statement.
Further, Yumnu has said that besides Raud, Yoosuf Yassar Abdul Gafoor was also present at Fentenoy. Yassar is one of the people the police say was among those who partied under the influence, at Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen's residence. Yumnu said that she went to Fentenoy on Yassar's invitation and that he was the one who shared the location of the house with her.
RaajjeTV posed several questions to the police regarding the case, including whether Yumnu had mentioned attending a party where drugs were present, and whether Yassar, whose identity has been made public, was indeed there, as she claimed. They also inquired whether Yassar or the four other individuals Yumnu mentioned appeared in any of the CCTV footage from the building’s seventh and ninth floors. In addition to this, RaajjeTV asked if the police possessed only the footage from the time of the incident, and whether it was true, as the family alleged, that they were no longer being questioned about the case.
The police have not answered any questions regarding Yassar in this matter. They have also not provided any information about the CCTV footage or the additional four people. However, in the information shared by the police with the media, they stated that due to the victim’s health condition and various other reasons, they have not had the opportunity to question the woman so far.
The police have also stated that from the moment the case of a woman falling onto the roof of H. Mithaaz on April 18 was reported and the police attended the scene, obtaining a statement from the woman was considered important for the investigation, and efforts were made to secure that opportunity.
However, MPS revealed that due to the woman's health condition and various other reasons, they have not had the opportunity to question her so far, and they want to question her as soon as the situation allows.
As this is an ongoing investigation, the police are still trying to obtain a statement from the victim in connection with the case, but they claim they have not received adequate cooperation from the family.
The police have stated that they are continuing to question the relevant parties in connection with the case and are working to verify the information provided to the police by these parties through the investigation.
The family has stated that when taken to the police and questioned, they kept saying that there was no camera in the house, and that it was a “random” house.
Yumnu’s family revealed that those who were with her abandoned her, leaving her to die. Her sister acknowledged that speaking out could deeply affect her own life, but said the family is determined to seek justice.
Yumnu’s sister questioned why the special presidential commission established to investigate the case has yet to contact the family. She also expressed concern that the police have stopped pursuing further inquiries. According to the family, authorities worked to discredit Yumnu and shape a damaging public image of her. They further alleged that investigators lied repeatedly, even when confronted about inconsistencies.
The profiles of eight individuals suspected of partying under the influence that night, have since been publicized; Raud Ahmed Zilal, 21, G. Eriyadhoo, Aishath Layaali Iqbal, 22, G.
