Naveen has been entrusted with the management of the police institution until someone is officially appointed to the position of CP

Within an hour of assigning the responsibilities of Acting Commissioner of Police to Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry, the decision has been reversed, and the temporary management of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has been handed over to Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan said that Naveen has been entrusted with the management of the police institution until someone is officially appointed to the position of Commissioner of Police.

The temporary assignment of the management of the police institution to Farhad was announced by Minister Ihusaan and Chief Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Heena Waleed on Saturday. They made the announcement at 7:46pm. However, exactly an hour later, the decision was reversed, and Minister Ihusaan posted that Naveen has been appointed as the Acting CP.

Shujau resigned from his position as Commissioner of Police late Saturday.

In the case of 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who was found fallen on the roof of a warehouse from the ninth floor of a building, in the early hours of April 18, several young adults took to the streets in protests calling for Shujau's resignation.

Protesters have also called for the resignation of Home Minister Ali Ihusaan and Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen in connection with the case. Both ministers, however, have rejected the demand, stating there is no reason for them to step down.

Other demands made by infuriated protesters include conducting a transparent investigation and arresting all those involved in the case.
