For the first time in a Maldivian court, the opportunity to submit a Victim Impact Statement has been granted.

On 21 April 2025, the Hulhumalé Magistrate Court sentenced a suspect to 54 years behind bars after finding him guilty of repeatedly sexually abusing a child over a period of approximately 10 years, starting when the victim was just eight years old.

A Victim Impact Statement is a statement submitted to the court by the victim of a case, describing the psychological and physical harm suffered due to the crime, and the impact of the incident on their life.

In connection with the case, the victim submitted a statement to the court through the Prosecutor General's Office, emotionally describing the impact of the incident on their life. The statement was read in court by Public Prosecutor Almas Mubarik.

In criminal cases involving victims, in addition to working to prove the crime, the Prosecutor General's Office prioritizes empowering victims. Submitting a Victim Impact Statement is a practice in free democratic societies to empower victims and provide them with solace.

In connection with the case, after the conviction and before sentencing, the Prosecutor General's Office requested the court to allow the victim to have their voice heard in court. The court granted the opportunity, which the Prosecutor General's Office welcomed. The office states that they are continuing to enhance opportunities for victims within the criminal justice system, steering towards a more victim-centered approach.
