The man who attempted suicide while he was detained at the Kulhudhuffushi City Police Station, has died while receiving treatment.
RaajjeMV understands that he passed away some time on Thursday while receiving treatment at Kulhudhuffushi Hospital.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) on April 4 revealed night that a Maldivian in custody at the Kulhudhuffushi Custodial in Haa Dhaal atoll had attempted suicide.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, the National Integrity Commission (NIC) revealed that they received information about a person under police custody attempting suicide around 09:12pm on April 4. The commission's emergency response team began actively working to determine how the incident occurred, on April 6.
In a statement released by the police, it was stated that a person in custody at the Kulhudhuffushi Police Custodial attempted suicide around 09:12pm on April 4. The police institution also revealed that he was receiving treatment at Kulhudhuffushi Hospital. The hospital back then reported that his condition remained serious days later and that he was being treated on ventilator support.
The police institution has highlighted that the individual was taken into police custody on April 2 in connection with a case of causing property damage and creating unrest while intoxicated. According to the statement, he is a 34-year-old Maldivian man.
Further, MPS said that they have taken necessary measures regarding this incident and had informed the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC) about the incident. The statement also highlighted that a team from Major Crime Investigation was sent to Kulhudhuffushi to investigate the incident.
In addition to this, police stated that a special investigation into how this incident occurred was carried out by the Police Professional Standards Command with high priority.
