A significant part of the shore protection project in Rathafandhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll, which was initiated by the former administration, has been completed.

Regarding the project, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) revealed that 94 percent of the Rathafandhoo shore protection project has been completed. They also highlighted that presently, the work on the retaining wall of the revetment is ongoing, and that the work is progressing at a rapid pace.

Under the project, revetments will be installed in an area of 461 meters to protect the island’s shore.

During the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the then Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure awarded the project to MTCC for MVR 27.8 million.

Rathafandhoo is an island with a population of about 1,385 people.

The people of the island have been enduring the hardships of coastal erosion for many years. Due to erosion and swells westward of the island, a large portion of the island's beach has eroded, and a significant part of the island's interior has faced issues with flooding. The flooding has also caused multiple levels of damage to agricultural lands and residential plots.

The shore protection project is expected to resolve the erosion issue faced by the island community.
