Govt. cannot take majority in upcoming elections: MUO

Panel discussion on Government threats to civil servants, employees of state owned corporations

Government will not be able to gain a super majority in LCE

Maldivian United Opposition (MUO) says that the Government will not be able to gain a super majority as they are claiming.

The group made the statement speaking to press after Monday’s cabinet meeting.

Shadow Cabinet Minister and former President Mohamed Nasheed’s lawyer Hisaan Hussain said the Government will not be able to claim a super majority as the public was aware of the actions of the Government.

Hisaan said the public was more than eager to say no to the Government in the elections, as evident from the trips MOU undertook to the islands.

She said MUO will launch a stronger campaign in the upcoming days.

Former Youth Minister and Shadow Cabinet Minister Maleeh Jamaal highlighted on the abuse of civil service for political purposes. He said the civil servants were forcefully recruited to ruling PPM, while Civil Service Commission and senior officials of various agencies remained blind to this.

Shidhatha Shareef, Shadow Cabinet Minister and Adhaalath Party’s Foreign Relations Committee Chair, said that these were not baseless rumors but actual situation at the ground. She said that it was vital that the public said no to the Government in order to prevent this from becoming a culture.

MUO adviser Adam Azim said the Government and civil servants must recognize that there were limits and in this instance they must say no to the Government. Azim, former STO MD and brother to jailed Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim, added that Government will be forced to listen to the public when they begin to follow their aspirations. He said the Council elections must be a platform in which the public practiced their rights.

MUO announced that a panel discussion will be held next Wednesday on Government threats to civil servants and employees of state owned corporations.
