Maldives Police Service (MPS) has taken a statement from Mariyam “Mandhy” Zubair, who is actively involved in the activities of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), regarding the black engine oil attack on her.
Mandhy was doused with black engine oil by a group of people on March 16 in the area where Woodberry Restaurant is located in the capital Malé City. It has been reported that the individuals who threw black engine oil at Mandhy were on a motorcycle, wearing helmets and masks.
While the case was reported to the police institution, Mandhy was summoned to the police station on Wednesday, and her statement was collected.
Speaking to RaajjeMV about the incident on behalf of Mandhy, MDP’s National Congress member Shathir Abdul Rahman revealed that those involved in incidents occurring in the capital city can be found through police investigation. Shathir also said that they have requested the police to find those who threw black engine oil at Mandhy and press charges against them.
In addition to this, Mandhy's side sought from the police institution to identify those behind the act and to press charges against them as well.
Further elaborating, Shathir said that it is unacceptable to attack people and endanger their lives every time they express their opinions. He also stated that the Maldives should not be in such a state now, and that this was a situation that existed in the Maldives long ago.
The black engine oil attack occurred while Mandhy had already been summoned to the police in connection with the ongoing serial MDP protests. So far, Mandhy has been summoned to the police three times.
While Mandhy has been summoned, she was also called in regarding a case submitted by the Children's Ombudsperson's Office. The police stated that this was related to a case where she was suspected of speaking in a manner that undermined the dignity of a minor.
The investigation into the case was initiated after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's spouse, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, decided to file civil lawsuits against several individuals, including Mandhy. Sajidha is filing civil lawsuits claiming that Mandhy has infringed upon the "dignity" of her child.
