Several prominent figures in the political activities of the main opposition party have been summoned so far

Mohamed Shamin, a prominent figure in the political activities of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was summoned to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Saturday in connection with the ongoing series of protests organized by the opposition.

The police institution sent a summons to Shamin on Thursday regarding the protests. The summons stated that Shamin was to appear at the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building at 2pm on Saturday. Accordingly, he presented himself to the police headquarters on Saturday.

The summons sent to Shamin stated that he was suspected of assembling and protesting loudly in various areas of Malé on the night of 10 March 2025, in violation of the Peaceful Assembly Act, obstructing public transportation and businesses, interfering with police duties, disobeying police orders, and obstructing law enforcement.

Shamin was summoned for questioning and to provide a statement regarding these allegations. The police summons indicated that the statement-taking process was estimated to take three hours.

While Shamin was summoned to the police in connection with the protests, former MP for Makunudhoo constituency, Mohamed Raee, has also been summoned to the police. In addition to this, former Managing Director of the Road Development Corporation (RDC), Moosa Ali Manik, had also received a summons from the police. All these individuals were summoned with the same allegations.

In connection with the peaceful protests carried out by the MDP, protesters allege that the police have been obstructing protest participants every night, using excessive force and inflicting numerous injuries.

The peaceful protests are calling for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to fulfill his campaign promise of handing over flats and land plots to those who have been allocated them.
