The Agent of Maldives for the case, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, has submitted written observations on behalf of the Maldives on 28 February 2025 to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case of "Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar)".

The case was filed by The Gambia against Myanmar at the ICJ on 11 November 2019, concerning the violent and inhumane acts being committed against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The ICJ accepted the Declaration of Intervention submitted by the Maldives to intervene in this case on 3 February 2024, and invited the Maldives to submit written observations related to the subject matter of its intervention.

In line with the role of an intervening party, the Maldives' observations focus on the interpretation of the articles of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Specifically, it highlights the interpretation of the "Duty to Punish Genocide" under Articles 1, 4, 5, and 6 of the Convention.

Maldives will always remain steadfast in its cooperation with international efforts to seek justice for Rohingya Muslims and to implement the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
