MP for Addu Meedhoo constituency, Abdul Rahman, has revealed that Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has been summoned to the People's Majlis for speaking in a very demeaning manner about the people of Addu’s Meedhoo district.
In connection with the issue, Abdul Rahman, who represents as an independent member at the People’s Majlis, had also sent a letter to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on February 6.
In the letter sent to the president, Abdul Rahman stated that in his capacity as the Member of Parliament representing Addu Meedhoo constituency, he met with Defense Minister Ghassan, during which the minister spoke in a very demeaning manner about the people of Addu Meedhoo - Addu citizens in general, and the Maldivian people as a whole.
He also revealed that he was bringing the matter to the attention of President Muizzu.
Abdul Rahman's letter states that he met Ghassan at the Parliament building during the sitting where the Presidential Address 2025 was delivered on Thursday morning. During the meeting with the minister, he pressed the minister about unanswered phone calls regarding two important matters concerning the interests of Addu citizens.
Abdul Rahman's letter stated that when he made this remark, the minister became angry and said that he didn’t “need to call” and that the minister did “not need to answer the phone”, going on to remark that Addu “is not his concern”.
Abdul Rahman noted that since Ghassan was someone he had met and talked with many times during the presidential election campaign, he reminded him of how he had said that if Addu citizens voted for the incumbent, the incumbent would make sure Addu citizens would never vote for anyone else, promising good things for them.
According to Abdul Rahman, the minister became even more angry when he made this remark.
The minister is to have said that he only went to the southernmost city when “you people” asked and that Addu was not even his concern.
Abdul Rahman stressed that he does not believe any minister should be able to speak in such a manner about the people of Addu, which has a population of over 35,000, or about Maldivian citizens in general.
Abdul Rahman's letter requests the president to ask Ghassan to apologize to the citizens for speaking in such a low-class manner.
In addition to this, Abdul Rahman has requested the president to remind Ghassan of his ministerial responsibilities and duties, and the oath he took when appointed as a minister.
Speaking to RaajjeMV on Thursday night regarding this matter, MP Abdul Rahman said that in addition to sending a letter to bring this to President Muizzu's attention, he will do the necessary work to summon Ghassan to the parliament for questioning.
