President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that establishing Public Works sites is an investment, and that a Public Works unit will be established in every atoll of the Maldives during this year.
Speaking at a meeting with the people of Maakurathu island of Raa atoll during his visit to the island, Muizzu said that the Public Works service center for R. Atoll will be established in the island as well.
Highlighting that Public Works services are extremely important for the long-term maintenance of many development projects, Muizzu said that this is not an expense that will go to waste in any way. He added that in the long run, having a Public Works unit to maintain the infrastructural development brought to islands would save a lot of expenses.
Muizzu said that in addition to establishing at least one unit to provide Public Works services in every atoll of the Maldives, two mobile Public Works units that can be transported and relocated with all resources will be created to cover the northern and southern regions of the country. He stated that these works will be carried out using the budget for the current year, 2025.
Further, Muizzu also spoke about the development of the island. Noting that there are many things that need to be done to bring real progress to the island's development, Muizzu assured that although these things have not been done for various reasons, he will move forward with matters as the people desire and deliver results. As such, he said that the harbor issue and the erosion issue will be resolved by completing that project, and the work that has begun to establish the Public Works site will be done to the standard desired by the people within this year.
Muizzu said that the work to solve the human resource shortage in the island’s health sector and the lack of other technical resources has been decided to be done within this year's budget, and the developmental needs of the education sector will also be addressed this year. In addition to this, Muizzu assured that development to allow for sports activities for maintaining good health will be brought.
As such, Muizzu also assured that a new futsal ground will be built in the island this year. He also said that more projects will be carried out in the coming years.
Referring to the housing shortage project faced by the entire country, Muizzu assured that the work of building housing units in the island will be budgeted for and carried out in 2026.
