The government has denied reports that some social media platforms are going to be banned in the Maldives.

The government made this statement at a time reports have been circulating that the incumbent administration was working to block "TikTok", one of the most widely used social media platforms in the Maldives.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ on Wednesday, Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office Heena Waleed confirmed that the government is not considering restricting any social media platforms and that no such discussions have taken place.

Heena said that the reports that some social media platforms are going to be banned are “absolutely” false and that the government has not decided to restrict any social media platform, nor has there been any discussion about it.

Further, the presidential spokesperson went on to clarify that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu places great importance on protecting and promoting the fundamental rights granted to citizens by the Constitution of Maldives.

Shortly after coming to power, the incumbent administration has blocked two websites. The government initially denied this. Later, they stated that the websites were blocked because they were operating without registration.
