Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has sent Independence Day greetings to his counterpart in Afghanistan.

As the country celebrated its 98th Independence Day on 19th August, the Minister sent greetings to Afghanistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Salahuddin Rabbani on Saturday.

Minister Asim conveyed Independence Day greetings from the government and people of Maldives "to the friendly people of Afghanistan".

He also expressed confidence "that the friendly relations existing between [the] two countries will further strengthen in the years ahead".

August 19 commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Rawalpindi in 1919, which granted Afghanistan full independence from Britain, after three Anglo-Afghan wars.
