Land scandal explodes; MDP demands gov’t sack Fazul as HDC MD, take action

Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has demanded the government dismiss Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, who was appointed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at ministerial level to manage the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), from his position as Managing Director and to take legal action against him.

This came after the scandal of HDC allegedly altering state documents to create land registries and illegally allocating plots in Hulhumalé to undeserving individuals blew up.

MDP has expressed concern over the theft of public housing and called for a swift investigation and action regarding the fraudulent allocation of plots of land through HDC.

In a statement released on Wednesday night, MDP expressed concern over HDC's preparation of false documents to fraudulently allocate land to many individuals who did not meet the criteria for the ‘Binveriyaa’ scheme, which was initiated by the MDP government to provide housing for Malé residents.

MDP’s statement highlighted that the exposure of the incumbent administration’s theft from the housing of Maldivian citizens and the execution of such a major act of treachery is clear evidence of the extent to which corruption and theft have taken root within the current administration.

Stressing that the fact that no action has been taken against HDC officials even after the issue came to light demonstrates that the current administration is encouraging corruption and theft, MDP has called for the harshest punishment stipulated by law for all parties involved in these transactions, as they are not believed to have been carried out by a single individual.

MDP urged the government to reclaim the lands given through deception and allocate them to the rightful beneficiaries of the 'Binveriyaa' scheme as soon as possible.

The statement also noted with regret that while numerous acts of theft and treachery are being carried out through HDC and other government-owned companies due to mismanagement, the country's investigative agencies and independent institutions are not taking any action and are acting in a way that encourages such activities.

Before concluding, the opposition party gave assurance that they will do everything in their power to prevent the incumbent administration from having the opportunity to steal from the housing of Maldivian citizens.
